Week One Is In The Books!

Week one is officially over!  It was a hot steamy week, feeling more like we should be at the pool than at school, but we survived and thrived!  We spent much of the first week getting to know each other and setting the guidelines and tone for the upcoming year.

Students practiced working cooperatively and independently.  Some of our activities involved working with partners.  Our class did a great job with this.  They took turns and were helpful with each other.

We also practiced working independently.  Students practiced building their stamina for silent, sustained reading.  We began the week with 1 minute before some students got antsy and are currently up to 12 minutes of focused reading.  Our goal is 20 plus minutes in one sitting!

We also started writing in our writer's notebooks.  Students will be asked to bring in copies of photos, stickers, pictures of things that are special to them and use these things to decorate their notebooks. We will decorate our notebooks next week.

Our first writing unit will be personal narratives.

In the next blog update, I will list our community agreements.  Thank you all for attending Ready-Set-Go conferences.  It is a great way to start the year!
