And the Spelling Bee Representatives are....

On Tuesday we held the third grade spelling bee.  Four students, plus one alternate, were chosen from each third grade classroom to compete in the grade level contest.  Our representatives were Nadja, Klaara, Tessa, Georgia and Dustin was the alternate.

After a several round competition, 4 finalist were selected to compete in the all-school Spelling Bee.  Congratulations to Tessa, Klaara and Nadja!  They out-spelled the competition and will be participating in the all-school bee.  This bee will be held on Thursday, January 26.
Congratulations to all the participants.  They all competed with respect and poise.

Mock Rocks and Mock Minerals
Our student geologists completed their experiments to determine the minerals in their mock rock.  The students followed a procedure to determine the minerals.  The students determined that their mock rocks contained various colored pebbles, shells, sand, flour, kosher salt and alum.

Students found evidence of the kosher salt and alum by mixing the gray matter from the mock rock with water, pouring out the water into an evaporation dish and once the water evaporated, they found salt crystals in their dishes.  After careful examination of the dishes and using a crystal identification key, they determined that the crystals that were in their dishes were kosher salt (along with a few alum crystals.)

Measuring in feet, inches and yards
Partners continued practicing their measuring accuracy by measuring various objects around the room.  Measurements were shared and we discussed reasons for differences in measurement.

Super Heros and Super Villains
This week, our writers' creative juices were flowing as they took their characters they created  and put them into action starring in their very own comic strip! The writers discovered how difficult it is to tell a story using only dialogue, illustrations and a few frames.

Upcoming Events

  • Dream Camp - Reminder, the students have been separated into 2 groups, A and B.  These groups will meet on alternated weeks.  This Tuesday, group B meets.
  • Hollywood Party - The Lily Pad once again filled the jar and voted on holding a Hollywood Themed Party.  We will hold this party on Thursday, January 26 from 11:30 to 1:30.  We will have the room decorated in a "starry" way and will watch a movie that was nominated for an academy award.  Should be a fun time!
  • Awards- As you are aware, we are doing a semester awards celebration.  Each student has selected a peer for whom they are to create an award.  We discussed that proper spelling, neatness and creativity are a must for this special acknowledgement.  Please make sure the wards are at school by Thursday and contact me with any questions you may have.
Stay Warm and enjoy winter's gift of snow!
