2nd Quarter Already???

Ms. Wimmler and I truly enjoyed sitting down with you these past few days talking about the progress your children have made.  Maybe I'm getting older (and I am) but I can't believe how quickly first quarter flew by!  It is so refreshing to be able to sit back and reflect on how much the children have grown and how much more they will mature over these next several months.  When my husband asked me how the conferences went, I told him I feel so lucky to be able to work with such fabulous students and meet with such compassionate parents.  I told him, "I work with such nice people! What great families!" We look forward to completing conference times next week. Thank you!

We have been wrapping up several longer term projects in the Lily Pad. On Friday, all third grade students will be getting together and sharing their final personal narrative books.  These books have been a labor of love and the students are proud of their final pieces.  The Lily Pad will get together with students from The Owl's Nest (Ms. Miller's class) and The Penguin Place, (Ms. Henze's class) and share their writing.  We will then celebrate with a P-A-R-T-Y! (Pictures to follow next week.)

Friday is also the day that students will be sharing the posters they made about how the Ho-Chunk people lived prior to Madison becoming a city.  Student groups were assigned a section of the book to read, take notes on and then create a poster to teach the rest of the class about what they read.

We are nearing the end of our Roald Dahl author's study as well.  Book groups have been reading a book by Mr. Dahl and they have heard read-a-louds by him. We have noticed that Roald Dahl's writing was heavily influenced by the people met and the experiences he had as a child.  We all appreciate his humor and his style of writing.  Our ending project will be to draw a favorite scene from the book the students read and then creating a play from the book based on their favorite parts.   Hey, have the kids check out his website.  The link is on the sidebar of the blog.

During Math Workshop, students have been working on measuring length and weight.

Students used standard and non-standard units of measure for these stations.

The third grade had some special visitors from the Elks club.  They hand out dictionaries to third grade students in Madison.  The students were all excited and appreciative of the generous gift.

Thanks to Jessie, we have a photo of two of our students meeting Jeff Kinney, the author of The Diary of a Wimpy series.  We had some very happy students.  Thanks also to Maegan Heindel, our LMC director, for coordinating this wonderful opportunity for students at Marquette!

Remember, next week is a short week due to the Thanksgiving Break.  I will have photos from Friday's Poster presentation and our authors' celebration early next week.

Enjoy these beautiful temperatures and have a great weekend.
