More Testing

The big news for this week is that we will be holding our WKCE testing.  Third graders are tested in reading and math.  Our actual testing times will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Then, after any make-up times are done, we will be done and can move on from testing.  On Monday, we discussed what the test looks like and did a sample reading and math test just so the students could get the feel for what they will encounter on the test. Math will look different this week, but we will try to at least meet with reading groups and will still do writing.

Hopefully our yoga times will help with any stress the children may be feeling!

The math fact homework has changed for this month.  Instead of having a large chunk of facts to practice, students will be given 10 facts a week to master.  We will check them on these facts and if they have those facts memorized, they will choose new facts for the next week.  Each child has a Ziploc baggie with 10 facts written on notecards.  These baggies and notecards should be returned to school on Fridays.

Note about homework for this week:
Due to the WKCE testing, we will not give any additional homework other than practicing the 10 math facts that came home with your child and to read everyday.

Math Charts
We have worked together as a class to come up with ways to show our thinking in math.  I am including this anchor chart on the blog.  I hope this helps as you work with math with your child at home.  As always, let us know if you have question about math or any other subject we are covering.

Speaking of math, students have also been working on concepts of capacity.  They began by using non-standard units to determine order of size of containers based on capacity. Then they used cups and fractional parts of cups to determine order of size for containers

 Role Model Status

We introduced a new behavior check-in system in the Lily pad
Everyday the students begin their day on Ready to Learn.  Students then can move up or down the chart based on behaviors.  We make sure to let students know that even if they have to move their clip down, they can always have the opportunity to move it up again if they turn their behavior around.  Students who make it to role model at the end of the day get a Hoppygram sent home letting you know the good news!
