Pancakes and Pajamas

Friday was a special day in the Lily Pad.  We all enjoyed pancakes and pajama day.  The students have worked hard these first few weeks of school and this third grade tradition was enjoyed by all.  Thank you to all the families who helped make this day possible.  We appreciate your donation of time and supplies!

Open House

We were excited to see so many families joining us for our 2015 Marquette Open House.  Students were excited to share their desks, classroom and work with their family.  Here are a few photos of some our families.

Glaciers

During social studies, students have been learning about the huge glacier that covered most of Wisconsin and Madison during the last ice age.  They learned that the 4 lakes and the Yahara River were gifts left behind by the glacier's presence.  Students also learned about how a glacier acts like a huge bulldozer, pushing sand, gravel, rocks and boulders many thousands of miles.  We created a model of a glacier using fudge swirl ice cream, chocolate chips, M&Ms, Oreos and chocolate sauce.  It was a yummy experience!

Flat Bucky

The Lily Pad will be participating in the UW athletic department's Flat Bucky program.  Our classroom will get an inside look at student-athletes attending class, traveling for competition, waking up early to lift weights -- all of the components of the student-athlete experience that are not readily apparent when the Badgers take the field. The concept is based on the story Flat Stanley. In the book Flat Stanley,  Stanley Lambchop is accidentally flattened by a bulletin board.  He soon finds he can go on many adventures due to his flat condition, including being mailed to some friends.  Our Bucky will be in the hands of a UW tennis player, Kelsey Grambeau.

Kelsey will travel with our Flat Bucky for the duration of the academic year. We are able to track our student-athlete’s Flat Bucky by following her Flat Bucky Instagram account. To ensure that our students are receiving quality messages, student-athletes will post about a school related theme.

The themes for this year are as follows:
September: Organization
October: Respecting teachers, parents, coaches & peers
November: School on the road
December: Study tips
January: Time management and being on time
February: Listening
March: Eating healthy & exercising
April: Finding a role model
May: Educational activities to do outside of school

Many of the students were interested in creating a Flat Bucky and we had 14 entries to choose from.  Students voted and picked our representative.
Our Flat Bucky who will travel with Kelsey is the one on the top!
