Buying Local

The Wednesday Market

On Wednesday, the Marquette third grade students piled onto a bus and headed downtown to experience the Wednesday Farmers Market.  Student groups were armed with clipboards, money and boundless energy. Each group made two trips around the market.  Each trip had a different focus.  The focus of the first loop was to see the variety of produce and goods for sale, price and categorize items and interview 2 different vendors. The focus of the second trip was to BUY some of the items found at the market with one condition. Students had to make a purchase to contribute to our stone soup.

Marquette Mile

The Marquette Mile is a longstanding tradition.  We have run/walked the mile for over 25 years!
Friday proved to be another beautiful and successful running of the Mile.  The leaves were showing off their colors and the participants were happy and enthusiastic.  All proceeds from the MM go towards 3 different community building field trips: third grade's Urban Adventure, fourth grade's caving trip and fifth grade's low and high ropes course trips.  THANK YOU to all the adults who volunteered.  This would not be possible without your support!

We finished!

The Mound Builders and the Hochungra

Students have been studying about the history of Madison and the first people who lived here.  We have learned that about 1000 years ago a group of people we call The Mound Builders (the Woodland people) lived here. For many thousands of years Wisconsin's inhabitants survived by hunting, fishing, and gathering wild plants.  Wisconsin has the largest number of mounds built and saved from destruction.

We are studying about the history of Ho-chunk people who have long called Madison home.  Students groups were assigned a section of text to read about the early days of Hochungra. The groups are creating posters that will be used to teach their classmates about what they have learned.

As we learn more about this nation of people, we will also address issues of stereotyping and in particular "Indian" Stereotypes. The good people at Rethinking Schools (www.rethinkingschools.org) compiled this amazing DVD.  It is thought provoking and narrated by Native American children.

Narrated by Native American children, the DVD Unlearning "Indian" Stereotypes teaches about racial stereotypes and provides an introduction to Native American history through the eyes of children.
