Geologists Study Mock Rocks

In the Lily Pad, students have switched their focus from being historians to becoming geologists.   We have learned that a geologist is a scientist who studies the earth.  Students are honing their observation skills by describing, drawing and measuring properties of a mock rock.

A Mock Rock is a model of a rock used during the first part of our Rocks and Minerals unit.  These rocks will be observed and taken part by students in order to determine the various minerals contained in our "rock".

Students first identified minerals based on drawing and examining the rocks.  They then broke their mock rocks apart to reveal other minerals contained on the inside.  These minerals were separated, categorize and recorded in their Science Journals.

Next week we will continue to find other ways to break our Mock Rock down even further in order to identify all the minerals in this rock.

We will have a science quiz coming up next week so watch your child's Yellow Folder for study materials!

Food Drive for The Goodman Center

There is a friendly competition going on at Marquette Elementary School and it is all for a GREAT cause.  Classrooms are competing to determine who can bring in the most food items for the Goodman Center's Holiday Food Drive.  The winning classroom gets to help the Firefighters load the truck with all food collected at Marquette.  Our classroom is currently in 2nd place behind Ms. Miller's class!  The food drive ends Thursday, so send in your items!

Data, Surveys and Graphs

Part of our math time these past few weeks has been focused on collecting and sorting data and then representing this data with a graph.
