Poetry, Pastries and Performances

There are few things in life that can top hearing children read their own poetry.  I love the honesty, creativity and voice that comes through in their writing.  We had a marvelous poetry tea and we were all so excited with the amazing turnout.  Students shared their haikus, cinquains, sound poems, color poems, shape poems, If I were in charge of the world poems, and my personal favorite, I am From poems.  The students were poised and proud as their shared their prose with our appreciative audience.

Our gift to our families

It was a packed house

We finally received our mock rocks and began our study of Rocks and Minerals.  The students spent some time making observation of the properties of their mock rocks.  They did detailed drawings, weighed and measured their rocks and recorded properties like smell, texture, luster, edges color, and shape.  When we get back from break we will take our mock rocks apart and try to determine the ingredients (or minerals) that are in our mock rocks.

This week we also selected our classroom's representatives for the third grade spelling bee.  Congratulations goes out to the students representing the Lily Pad: Georgia, Nadja, Tessa, Klaara and Dustin, our alternate.  All students at Marquette were given the same 20 word test.  This is how each classroom selected their representatives.  There will be a third grade spelling bee the week of January 16th.  We will spell down to 3 grade level representatives plus one alternate.  These students will participate in an all-school spelling bee.  The winner will represent Marquette in the citywide Spelling Bee.  Good luck to all!

I want to take this time to wish all of you safe travels, good health and quality family time for this upcoming break and for the new year!  We do not return to school until January 9th. If you are celebrating, enjoy your holiday!
Peace to you all.
