We set up our notebooks with 3 key questions to help guide and focus the research process. Students have practiced reading information and writing they points in their own words.
Students will create paragraphs using the notes they took. They will then create posters to display what they learned about their countries. Our final projects will be ready to be presented to our class on Wednesday, December 17 and we will hold a gallery walk for parents on Thursday, December 18. Stay tuned for more details!
Taking a Stand
During class meeting an issue regarding vandalism and writing on the bathrooms. We discussed the issue, shared our feelings and then brainstormed solutions. Students chose to either write and make announcements over the intercom, make posters or write a letter to classrooms.
Special Properties of Minerals
Student geologist learned about some special properties unique to minerals: hardness and the reaction of calcite to a cold acid (vinegar). We learned about how minerals could be sorted by their hardness (measured as resistance to being scratched.) Students used tools, a fingernail, a penny and a paperclip, to measure the hardness of various minerals.
We then learned that calcite has a unique property when it is added to a cold acid, like vinegar. We saw the calcite bubbles and dissolves when it is added to vinegar.
Students then used this knowledge to test 4 rocks, marble, limestone, sandstone and basalt, to see if they contained calcite.
Next week we will switch the focus our SSS time to the history of Madison.
Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh My Gosh!
