Science
This week our student scientists conducted their first science experiment of the year testing the properties of water. Students were asked to predict "How many drops of water will fit on the head of a penny?" We discussed the question, examined the penny and eyedropper and then made predictions. Our predictions ranged from 2-8 drops of water. Then, partnerships conducted an experiment to test these predictions.
I can safely say that the scientists were all surprised by the results! Our data ranged from 16 drops to 60 drops of water. We discussed why we had such a range and then discussed why so many drops of water fit on a penny.
There are two properties at work in this experiment: cohesion and surface tension. Cohesion is the attraction of like molecules to one another. In this case, the like molecules are the H20 molecules in the water drops. Surface tension is a special term we use to describe the cohesion between water molecules.
Reading to Someone
During our Reading Block, students have options on how to spend their time. Everyday, they will spend part of the block reading to self and/or working on book group work. We discuss that this is like the main course of a meal. Beyond this, student can select from a menu of options how they will spend the rest of their independent reading time. They may Read to Someone, Listen to Reading (using RazKids or an audio book) or work on writing by responding to reading. The first month of school, we practice these options so that students understand the expectations and can be independent learners.
Math Games for Fluency
A part of the new math curriculum, Bridges, uses games for reinforcing fact work and other math skills the students are learning. The games are fun, engaging and can be challenging! During Unit 1, students will be introduced to 8 games that they will play.
Another word about Bridges: this is the first year for this curriculum in our district. Marquette is an early adopter of the program along with 8 - 10 other elementary schools. My initial impression is that it will be a rigorous curriculum. If your child is struggling with any of the Home Connections, please have them complete what they understand and then send the sheet back to school with a note. Some of the terminology may be new to them and it has not been internalized. I can then help your child with these concepts.
