We continue to add new elements to our literacy block. Students have practiced being independent readers and writers. This week we added Reading to Someone and Listening to reading. Pairs sat Elbow-Elbow-Knee-Knee and practiced their reading and listening skills. This will help with reading
fluency.
Ms. Heindel came to our room with the school cart of netbooks. She trained us on how to use them and in the proper care of them.
Students then used these to practice "Listening to Reading". There are a few audio websites on the Marquette Library's homepage - PebbleGo and BookFlix. I have a link on our classroom website under "Useful Links" This will take you directly to the Library Homepage and students can access either of these sites from a home computer. These two sites are located under the "database" tab on the homepage. Each student also has a Raz-Kids account they can access from home. The link for that site can be found here on the blog (right side under "Helpful Website") as well as the Library Homepage under the "Subjects/Language Arts Page and on our classroom website "Helpful Links" page. Students select Login in with teacher username kmack6. As always, let me know if you have any questions about this.
A lot of WOWS and Oooos and Ahhhhs could be heard coming out of the Lily Pad this week as students experimented with the chemical bonds milk and what happens when these bonds are disrupted by dish soap. We used whole milk, food coloring and Dawn dish soap to make the explosion of color at our desks.
The basic principle behind this is that milk is mostly water but it also contains vitamins, protein and minerals as well as tiny droplets of fat. The fats and protein are sensitive to changes in the surrounding liquid. This is where the dish soap comes in. The dish soap disrupts the bonds causing the swirling of colors to occur. We then tried the experiment again using different milk containing higher and lower fat content. Ask your child what happened!
Tuesday is a big day at Marquette: Our annual Open House. Please plan on attending and visiting our classroom between 5:45 and 6:45. This is also an opportunity to visit encore classes (like music, gym, art, and LMC). I will have a list of times that I could use classroom volunteers as well as times for our Fall Conferences on Tuesday at Open House. Hope to see you all on Tuesday!
