We have devoted ample time these past few weeks building community and creating a classroom that will help us all feel safe and cared for. The students' guiding principles this year are to be Kind and Caring, Safe, Responsible, and Respectful. We all agreed that these words describe the type of classroom we want to live and grow in this year.
We created a document that everyone (students and staff) signed that will help guide us this year and enable all of us to achieve our hopes and dreams for learning and growing socially.
Along with our community building activities, we have been learning and practicing many routines. These routines include school-wide routines (like cafeteria expectations, bathroom expectations, hallway expectations, etc...) as well as classroom routines and rituals. The classroom routines encompass everything from what our literacy block should look-like-sound-like-feel-like to how to use math manipulatives and games during our math block.
The excitement was evident on the day we began science! Student partnerships predicted how many drops of water would fit on a penny and then they conducted 6 trials to test their predictions. Our predictions ranges from 4 to 10 drops but the results proved to be significantly different from what we thought! Anywhere from 20 to 40 drops fit on the top of a penny! We discussed the reason for this and learned that the polarity of water molecules caused the water to act the way that it did!
