It was the PERFECT fall day to run/walk the Marquette Mile! We had beautiful weather for our event. This event has occurred for over 20 years and it was once again enjoyed by all. This is a major fundraiser for our adventure education trips. In third grade we go on an urban adventure, in fourth grade the students go spelunking in a local cave and the fifth grade students go to the School Forest for a low ropes and high ropes experience. Thanks again for your support. Thank you to those parents who walked/ran with us and those who monitored the corners.
Glaciers
The third graders have been learning about the history of Madison in Social Studies. One of the topics they are studying is how Madison came to be the place it is today. So, we set our experimenters off on a mission to recreate the glaciers which once covered the earth. Lily padders had to cooperate and work through a series of steps in their experiment to show how glaciers helped carve out the land and create Madison’s famous lakes. They discovered that the glaciers advanced as more “snow” was added onto the glacier and the sediment (rocks, sand, and soil) was moved around as the glacier advanced. By recreating this important time in our history, the students got to see first hand how glaciers helped shape the land.

The Lily Pad Puts a Stop to Bullying
October is National Bullying Prevention Month, In honor of this, students created inspirational Anti-Bullying posters. They will be hung around the school.
The Cool Readers Group
Three spunky and fun girls from the Lily Pad decided that they wanted to give students another option at recess time. They also wanted to help new students, or students who were looking to meet new people, a chance to get know other kids at Marquette. This is how Cool Readers got started. It is a group of students who sign-up to read with other kids at recess time and talk about books! What a great way to make friends and show our appreciation for reading and books. These three girls have worked hard to organize this reading time by making flyers, designing sign-up lists for the third grade classrooms, and collecting books for teachers to bring outside. Cool Readers will take place on Fridays.
The Ronald McDonald House Food Drive
We had a successful food drive for the Ronald McDonald House. Over the half of the kids in the classroom brought food in. Last week, when Ms. Miller brought the first batch of food to the RMH, the staff was overwhelmed with gratitude! Thank you so much for all of your generous donations!

Publishing Our Personal Narratives
We are nearing the end of our Personal Narrative unit. The students have worked hard on their writing and we have seen amazing results from all of this hard work. We plan to begin publishing next week and the students will share their writing with students in Mrs. Henze's class the first week in November.
Finding paragraphs in our writing.
Revising paragraphs and adding more details to help the writer make the story clearer for the reader.
Writing our revised stories as final copies.
Our next writing unit will be a Persuasive Writing Unit. We will read mentor texts to compliment our writing during our reader's workshop time.
