The forecasters were predicting rain and we had a few measly rain drops but all in all it was a PERFECT fall day for the Farmer's Market! Our day began with the students clambering out of school and over to the bus stop. They were so excited that they cheered and clapped when the Madison Metro Bus came! (Now that's enthusiasm!) The bus ride is always one of the highlights of these field trips!
We all poured onto the bus and headed down to MLK, Jr. Blvd for the Wednesday market.
The vendors where there in full force and there were tons of wonderful things from which the students could choose to spend their $3.00. The first venture around the market was for the students to look at all the produce, listing the different items they saw and interviewing a few of the vendors. We found out that many things were in season, but that there was an abundance of apples, pumpkins, squash and gourds.
All the adult volunteers and teachers were so impressed with how polite and respectful the students were at the market. We were proud that our students were ambassadors for Marquette Elementary School. One task each student had was to buy an item to go into our stone soup that we are making on Thursday. We have read several versions of Stone Soup as read during our read aloud time and we are excited to see how our stone soup turns out! We will have cabbage, radishes, tomatillos, cilantro, cauliflower, beats, onions, carrots, etc for our soup. And of course 2 stones! Students were then able to use the rest of their money to use the rest of their money anyway the wanted. Some students even received a "good student" discount at the Silly Yak bakery. Thank you to all the volunteers for joining us today!
Junior Achievement: We had another visit from our friend Matt who is a volunteer with Junior Achievement. This week students learned about blue prints and practiced reading and working with a blueprint. We also created businesses, service providers and residential dwellings and farming supply companies and placed them in the appropriate zone.
Finally, Laurie Irwin from the Ronald McDonald house came to talk with us about the house and how it provides a valuable service to families.
Here is a note from Ms. Miller, who arranged the visit:
The Lily Pad classroom had a special visitor, Laurie Irwin, from the Ronald McDonald House. She came into class this Wednesday to talk to the students about the McDonald House and how it works hard to help our community. Laurie discussed with the students how October is a tough month for the House, and they are in need of cereal and canned meals (Spaghettios, ravioli, soup, etc.).
As a class, we are going to be having a food drive for these items starting Thursday, October 13th and ending Friday, October 21st.
