All right! Real Science!

The students in the Lily Pad kicked off 3rd grade science with some simple chemistry experiments.  On Tuesday, students worked with partners to determine Chemical or Physical change. In the picture below students watch as Ms. Mack burned newspaper.  They decided that this was a chemical change.
Today in science lab, Ms. Miller had students think about the characteristics or properties of two states of matter, solids and liquids.  The students were then given some "blue goo" to experiment with to determine if it was a solid or a liquid.  It was messy and fun and the students did some great thinking.

After writing about their observations and sharing their ideas with their tablemates, students learned that "blue goo" was a non-Newtonian substance that exhibits characteristics of both solids and liquids.

In our reader's workshop this week, students practiced monitoring their inner conversation.  We have learned that readers do a lot of thinking while they read and this thinking helps them to comprehend the text they are reading.  We read the book How Many Days to America? A Thanksgiving Story by Eve Bunting. This book lends itself to readers asking questions and leads to rich thinking.
Students recorded their thinking on post-it notes and then those post-it notes where entered into their reading response logs.
